Reorganisation of Finland’s network of diplomatic missions to continue

Press release 160/2012
28 June 2012

The Ministry for Foreign Affairs is continuing the reorganisation of Finland’s network of diplomatic missions.

- Finland’s Consulate General in Hamburg, Germany, and the Consulate in Sydney, Australia, will be closed during 2013.
- The Consulate General located in Los Angeles will continue operations on a reduced budget.
- Finland’s Permanent Mission to the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), based in Vienna, will be merged with the Finnish Embassy in Vienna.

In accordance with Government spending limits and budget decisions, the Ministry for Foreign Affairs is seeking cost savings by closing diplomatic missions and merging the operations of some diplomatic missions located in close proximity. Operations in Hamburg will continue through a Honorary Consulate that will be opened, supported in the provision of services to citizens by the Embassy in Berlin. Resources in Australia will be concentrated to the Embassy situated in Canberra.

The closing of the diplomatic missions mentioned above reduces the annual costs of the diplomatic mission network by 450,000 euros. Aside from other cost-cutting measures, the cuts in the Foreign Ministry’s operating budget made by Government decisions require the closing of a total of about 15 missions in order to reach the overall savings obligation of about 13 million euros.

In accordance with previous decisions, the Finnish Consulate General in Canton and the Consulate in Las Palmas will close by 1 August 2012.
