President of the Republic and the Cabinet Committee on Foreign and Security Policy discussed the situation in Ukraine

Government Communications Department
Press release 159/2014
16.4.2014

On Wednesday 16 April 2014, the President of the Republic and the Cabinet Committee on Foreign and Security Policy discussed the situation in Ukraine.

The situation in Ukraine continues to raise concern. Tension has increased in eastern Ukraine. The Government's calls for an end to the armed occupation of government buildings have not been followed. As per its responsibilities, the Government is trying to return order. Casualties have been reported and it is possible that violence will spread. All parties, including Russia, should do their part to de-escalate the situation and reduce tensions. The negotiations between Ukraine, Russia, the EU and the United States in Geneva on 17 April will provide an important opportunity to seek for a negotiated solution and open dialogue between Ukraine and Russia. It is imperative that Ukraine's independence, unity and territorial integrity are respected.

The meeting also noted that the meeting of the Council of the Baltic Sea States, to be held at the beginning of June, will not be organised as a prime ministerial level summit, as was originally planned. Instead, the meeting is envisaged to be held at the level of ministers of the environment.  Other meetings, such as the Annual Forum of the EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region, will take place, as planned, in connection with the Turku Baltic Sea 2014 event.
