External economic relations
Recent years have brought changes to the trade policy environment. Although Finland can achieve its trade policy objectives by being active in the World Trade Organization, Finland is equally committed to promoting the multilateral negotiations and the bilateral and regional free trade negotiations that are on the EU agenda.
International value chains; trade in services; and issues linked to the digital economy have altered the procedures the Department for External Economic Relations uses to support the competitiveness of Finnish businesses. The significance of trade policy in geopolitics has also become increasingly topical.
In order to respond to new challenges related to external economic relations, new methods are required. Team Finland’s activities accomplish this at the national level. At the same time, proactive measures are employed in an effort to impress upon the EU the importance of the changing nature of international business activities in its trade policy goals, taking into account Finland’s perspective.
