Political Department: duties

The Political Department handles the following issues:

Finland’s foreign and security policy in general and global political and security issues;
European Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP);
Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP);
North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) and Partnership for Peace (PfP) activities;
military crisis management and civilian crisis management;
Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE);
Council of Europe;
arms control, defence materiel export issues, defence materiel cooperation and international export control cooperation, including state vessels and state aircraft licences;
human rights policy, general human rights issues and democracy issues;
issues related to refugee, immigration and asylum policy;
general UN issues, coordination of UN issues, UN General Assembly and Security Council;
issues related to global governance;
participation in preparation of international agreements and legislation related to the tasks of the Department in cooperation with the Legal Service.
