Unit for Passports and Visas

The Unit for Passports and Visas is responsible for:

• contribution to the preparation of immigration policy
• the development of the EU and Schengen visa systems
• guidance and coordination relating to authorisations of entry by the Finnish embassies and consulates abroad, and for the provision of statements on visa applications
• the provision of guidance for embassies and consulates in passport issues and for the coordination of their activities, processing of applications received by embassies not connected to the common passport system, and for the development of the passport system
• the issue of service passports, and for the visa applications of holders of diplomatic and service passports
• legal assistance in issues relating to the travel documents of foreigners residing in Finland
• the approval of foreign travel documents
• legal questions and legislation relating to the Unit's responsibilities, including the provision of expertise and advice thereon
• the issue of certificates for the authorities of other states in accordance with the Notaries Public Act (287/1960)
