The Unit for EU and Treaty Law

The Unit for EU and Treaty Law is responsible for:

  • the preparation and implementation of international treaties, unless they fall within the competence of another organisational unit, and questions of treaty law
  • questions of European Union (EU) treaty law
  • the provision of expertise and advice on EU law and international treaties
  • participation in the legal development of the institutional structure and decision-making and legislative procedures of the EU
  • the maintenance of a treaty register, and the registration of treaties with the United Nations
  • functions of the depositary of international treaties
  • general legal questions relating to privileges and immunities
  • legal questions concerning the Åland Islands
  • the preparation of national legislation, unless the issue falls within the competence of another organisational unit, and the guidance and development of the preparation of legislation
  • the inspection of treaties and legislation.
