Support for development policy researchers

The Ministry for Foreign Affairs funds research focusing on development and developing countries, which helps in the understanding of poverty and development and their cause and effect relationship. The cooperation with researchers supports the attainment of the development cooperation goals – poverty reduction and promotion of sustainable development.

Different channels of funding

Development policy research offers the researcher community and different interest groups opportunities to contribute to the planning of development policy and development cooperation. Contacts and networking between researchers active in the area in Finland and in the developing countries as well as internationally is supported and encouraged.

The Ministry for Foreign Affairs and the Academy of Finland provide joint funding to development research carried out by the Academy. Most research projects run for several years. Application instructions can be found on the development research page of the Academy of Finland website.

The Foreign Ministry also grants support to international research institutes and projects. Examples of them include the Nordic Africa Institute and the European Centre for Development Policy Management (ECDPM) as well as the Europaean Report on Development (ERD).

In addition, the Ministry grants support to several research institutes and programmes under multilateral organisations, such as the World Bank's Knowledge for Change Programme (KCP)  and UNU -Wider.

Development research is also supported as a part of country and regional programmes.

For further information about the funding, please contact the Unit for General Development Policy and Planning.
